Judge’s Notebook 3: Pale Illusion

Pale Illusion attacks the theme of Transcending Borders most directly through a blend of eclectic references.
Review by Eleanor Medier, judge, for the UWA 3D Art Competition, Transcending Borders, in Judge’s Notebook.

3- “The Paper Empire” by Pale Illusion

Infusing cultural history, stylistic references, and universal symbolism, Pale Illusion demonstrates that borders between people are man-made flimsy constructions. Cardboard walls, fragile and temporary as they may be, still demand extraordinary individual effort to overcome. Optimistically showing that love can transcend (with the help of ladders and ambition) however constructions may impede. Yet, the tower seems to show there is a level of permanence in these borders too. When one is broken down, perhaps another replaces?

There are cartoons and graffiti on the walls that brings to mind famous revolutions, infamous breaking down walls, and political expression. The entire sculpture has a political undertone that connects various conflicts and patterns known for setting up borders.

The two figures are symbolic of the necessity of individual accomplishments to first make bridges over difficulties, with the theme that love conquers all. Though the figures, upon closeup, are mannekin-like, their hats symbolize nationalities, thus the coming together of what were opposing sides. The message seems to be that it takes individuals that care about one another as human beings to break down society’s constructs.

This rich blend of images in a cohesive presentation demands the viewer to take in each facet and relate them together. If there were any work to beg for discussion, it is this one!
