5- “Yellow House” by Dusty Canning

Bringing a new approach to such a well-known subject is rare, risky, and usually simply derivative. Yet bringing the 2D qualities of Van Gogh’s painting into a semi-3D construction opens new levels of experience! Sitting at the cafe, taking in the color of Southern France, imagining the days of the Impressionists, the romance of such an artistic breakthrough, and the anguish of the self-tortured Van Gogh, all bring a solid emotional foundation to this work.

How far to take such a setting is a big question. To construct a group of buildings, that the artist originally painted, are presented here as facades, even with the act of construction captured behind the scenes with supports shown, like a stage set. However, could it be more realized by adding Van Gogh’s famous bedroom inside?

So inviting, however, this is a great setting to meet for conversation. It makes a visitor wish to linger and look around while sharing virtual beverages of choice. The borders that are bridged involve art at three levels of reality: a real place, a painted interpretation, and a 3D virtual construction. Borders are what is involved between interpretations—what do all three realities have in common?
