Judge’s Notebook 6: Ama Avro

Ama Avro combines a classic dichotomy with universally understood symbols—simple, elegant, and memorable.

6- “Utopia” by Ama Avro

Through using universal symbols of the peace dove and the scavenger crow, the black/white evil/good threat/protect tensions do have results. The balance created between these forces is what protects the earth and offers a cohesion between differences. Realistic and optimistic at the same time, this delicate depiction relies on awareness and the diligence of protection. It takes effort for one white bird in flight to counteract two black ones on the ground. The noble effort is possible, but not easy. The health of the earth is held in the balance.

The yin/yang of opposing forces may be one of the oldest artistically explored themes of tension in culture. So finding a new way to express it is risky, and rare to do without being trite. Adding a power of boldness to the components gives it impact, though the overall impression is delicate.

The border to overcome may be one of complacency. To keep the white bird in action must always require diligence. The black birds have an easier job, as they simply wait until there is opportunity to wreck destruction. And there are two of them, to the one white dove. The moralistic tale here is a clear one.
