Judge’s Notebook 7: Sharni Azalee

Sharni Azalee’s piece requires a bold visitor, who is then rewarded by the most poetic encounter to capture the essence of cyber romance.

7- “Never Say Never—Love Transcends Borders” by Sharni Azalee

Not sure at first what to do when first confronting this sculpture, the ladder eventually caused me to climb up and enter inside this egg form. But stop—why an egg form? The skill of how this shell is presented begs notice, because usually the colors of pink with flowers is too pretty, even saccharin. Yet this presentation, is warm without being trite. Then, from the blackness of the background, and the mystery of the ladder, what is inside comes both as a surprise, yet still relates to the outside! A blast of white first assaults the eyes, causing adjustment to discover an inviting bench, shaded by a lone tree.

Another difficult visual integration is achieved here with the poetry that floats in the sky. This white space is endless—with no horizon or walls. Yet it is cheerful, positive, and protected—a unlimited universe in itself.

The poetry captures the very unique issues contained in virtual love—the closeness and the distance, the trust and the sharing, the limits and the perceptions. It is real, and it is not real. Where is the difference between what the lover wishes for and what is really there? What is the boundary between emotions in a created world versus the real emotions in a world of circumstance? Anyone who has ever loved afar will find heart strings playing a visual and literary song in this work.

To say that love overcomes all barriers is not only a common statement, but fundamentally untrue. Love must accept limitations, circumstances, disparate directions, conflicting expectations, and require a great effort to bridge communication with the tools available. Love does not just happen and become a priority. Love must be more supportive than directive. Each deep relationship will deal with these issues. With honesty, love always comes out ahead.
