Judge’s Notebook 8: Giovanna Cerise

Giovanna Cerise compiles levels of surrounding limitations. Pulling the viewer into a maze that shifts depending on view, barriers between individuals unite in similarities.
Review by Eleanor Medier, judge, for the UWA 3D Art Competition, Transcending Borders, in Judge’s Notebook.

Perception is always a barrier between people, as it is impossible to see through another person’s eyes. This is the universal challenge of conflict. Each person is bound by the restrictions of values, environments, histories, and cultures. This sculpture expresses, in bold contrasts of black, white, and red, symbolic figures trapped in geometric shapes.

Visually wandering through this construction is a visual treat, like a maze where the discoverer does not mind being lost. The walls seem to offer an entrapment—Is there a way for one person to visit another? To understand another? If there were a shifting movement, might there be new overlaps of communication?

Transcending borders can be accepting them. Maybe there are ways to connect that don’t break down division, but ignore it. Whether this work is optimistic or pessimistic bears discussion. there is a shared circumstance between these figures, a commonality. Everyone shares the same human condition, so in that parallel lies the potential for understanding.

As a blend of abstraction and figurative, the contrast between gives the composition visual strength. Getting inside this piece causes the viewer to interact and to penetrate these borders, each visitor will in a different way.
