Chosen by Bryn Oh to represent her development as a virtual immersive artist

The Singularity of Kumiko brings life and death decisions down to ones of ethics. As the daughter of Imogen, Kumiko’s story reveals the fate of the mother. The in-world build presents a dark landscape of danger and mystery. But that is simply an introduction. Bryn’s online writing integrates the immersive experience, making it faster to access. The linear quality of the blog series makes use of a letter format to string the plot together and clarify the segments. Again she presents levels between the real, the virtual, and the imaginative. In this progression, they become even more fused.
Similarly, as Bryn grows more into the presentation of morality tales, she continually pushes the boundaries of media blending. She takes the viewer on a journey of observation, inclusion, and self-questioning. Presented with the collision of life and death, there are questions that have no right or wrong answers, though answers may be definitive. To find fulfillment, love, and goodness, the opposite must also exist. Death is needed to make life precious. The immortality of technology destroys this, and thus, is in direct opposition to Imogen’s choices.
Singularity of Kumiko both explains mysteries from Imogen and the Pigeons, but also stands alone. It presents a fictitious moral choice that symbolizes real values and priority choices.
“The Singularity used some new methods of presentation such as experience tools, material shaders and projectors, which allowed me to create the flashlight effect for exploration in the dark environment. It experiments with immersive ideas such as allowing one’s avatar to be killed, and thus deepen one’s anxiety within the build, further immersing the viewer. Many of the works are progressions in understanding the medium— focusing on its particular strengths and evaluating its weaknesses. Immersion is a very fragile state. It is a constant quest to find ways to further deepen that immersion by using elements such as sound, narrative, interaction, and so on. It was also my first foray into using the Occulus Rift.
“SL is somewhere in between the real world and the world I create. For this story, I want to show two ways to look at the idea of memory storage: One where Kumiko feels it would be wrong to adjust ones memories (as each of us needs sadness to appreciate joy), and inevitably people would edit out the sad parts of their life if it were possible, while Imogen shows that changing her memories brought her joy.

Viewers can’t just look at a piece and not wish to know more. Each is enigmatic on its own. Each hints of more levels to come. The in-world review explores how the virtual world serves as the stage for Bryn’s creations. Like the levels that she incorporates between media, and complementary messages that use the features of each, Sim Street Journal is also multi-media in a similar range: from experiencing sims in SL, to capturing representative images, to building themes using complementary online vehicles.
