Judge’s Notebook 2: Jipe Loon

Jipe Loon takes the literal/visual connection to an extreme. Telling an epic narrative story in one setting, this well crafted creation incorporates universal symbols in new ways.
Review by Eleanor Medier, judge, for the UWA 3D Art Competition, Transcending Borders, in Judge’s Notebook.

Loaded with symbols and creatures, by walking around this sculpture, more are discovered. This jumble of figures captures a frozen moment in time—a pivotal epic moment of change—forever captured for analysis. Like any monumental historically depicting work of the past, the moment of victory is immortalized. Here is an entire adventure, drama, and sequence concluded.

A page can be written just on the symbolic references and connotations! Not generally a fan of riddles in art, this one is an exception because it is so well done. Every portion adds to the mystery. Stories can be invented easily about how this situation came to be.

Questions are numerous, but can begin with the structure—the significance of the large backbone skeleton. The blue monster figure, with markings of crucifixion on feet and hands, is defeated, perhaps that is blue blood spilled on the floor. Who is he? Who is the hero that defeated this creature? And who is the angel of reward, coming down in a Michaelangelo pose to bestow divide judgement?

Finally, the eagle, often a symbol of justice, accompanies the celestial one. The bridge between the divine, the human, and the monstrous, is transcended by right and wrong, an eternal battle of different values. The point here seems to be that a noble cause overcomes opposition. Sacrifice is rewarded.
